18 July 2022

The 16th and 17th July saw the second event of the RS Tera Northern Series and the RS Northern Tera Championship which was hosted by Bassenthwaite Sailing Club, and sailed as part of the wider NW Junior Traveller Series.

A total of 14 RS Tera Sports and 10 RS Tera Pro’s competed in the event and it was nice to see newcomers from Ullswater, Roa Island and the Isle of Man joining the fleets.
On Saturday, three races were sailed back to back with blue skies and westerly winds which started light and increased through the afternoon. In the sport fleet Thomas Whitehead from Filey won every race, with Olivia Dembrinska from Ullswater, brother Daniel Whitehead and Laia Priestley also from Ullswater in contention for races 1 & 2. In race 3, Freddie Wood from Leigh and Lowton found his form to finish 2nd and Isla McKeown from Gresford had a superb result and the biggest smile as she came 3rd. In the Pro fleet Max Rawlinson in his final season in the Tera took the bullet followed by local Matthew Sommerville and Matthew Knowles from Bolton. Races 2 & 3 saw Matthew Sommerville take the lead followed by Rawlinson and Knowles.
With the warm temperatures there was lots of post-race enjoyment on the water, followed by a de-brief for the sailors.
Following overnight rain, Sunday start with grey skies and an unsettled wind. There was a slight postponement until 11am whilst the wind settled and as forecast came in from the south. The race started in F1-2 winds, however throughout the race the wind veered northerly which caused a shadow from Sale Fell on the race course. Race 1 was sailed and then there was a lunch break, which included a visit from the Ice Cream van and competitors headed back out ice creams in hand for a final race of the event in champagne sailing conditions thanks to the sea breeze kicking in.
In the sport fleet, Thomas Whitehead led the way again in both races, followed by brother Daniel and Matthew Boatman from Sunderland Yacht Club.
In the Pro fleet, in race 4 Matthew Somerville led the way again followed by Max Rawlinson and this time Henry Kirkpatrick also from Bassenthwaite. In the final race Max took the bullet followed by Matthew Knowles and Matthew Somerville.
It was an excellent weekend and memories were made for all both on and off the water. We’d like to thank Bassenthwaite Sailing Club for their excellent facilities and their excellent hospitality and hard work for hosting the event.
